Chappell unhappy with the Squad?

Here's a very interesting article by Rajan Bala of the Deccan Chronicle - Greg was unhappy with Cup squad

Some very important observations from the article are -

  • The seniors forced the selectors to go for this team and the chairman of selectors went with them due to the fear of media.
  • Yuvraj being projected as a future captain is a joke, as he has neither the acumen necessary for the job , nor the potential to take it up.
  • Karthik is indeed a great find - not only as a batsman, but as a future leader too.

If what the reporter says is indeed true (he would require a lot of guts to fabricate something of this order in the midst of a crisis like this), then there are a few very important questions that we need to ask ourselves -

  • Why should Chappell's be the first head to roll?
  • What becomes of the selectors who decided to go with experience over youth (what an irony that the very young Bangladeshis caused our exit...)
  • There is already lengthy discussions and talks about making Yuvraj the captain and having him ready for 2011. If the man who worked so closely with Yuvraj itself has no confidence in his ability, would 2011 be any different.

But then, it is not completely right to take absolve Chappell of all the blame. He too has his share of failures -

  • If Karthik is indeed a great thinking batsman, why didn't Chappell have him play - after all the playing eleven is chosen by the touring selection committee that includes the coach and captain, among others - surely he could have had a say in that.
  • What of Irfan Pathan. Chappell who strongly believed in his presence to balance the team, never had him play.
  • Where did the 'Process' that he so strongly kept talking about for the last two years go? What was the point of all the experimentation in batting order and strategy, if it was not applied when it mattered.

Agreed he did not have a final say in the team selection - but he definitely had and could have made a difference about the above issues.

It is most certain that Chappell will go - but don't expect him to go away in silence accepting disgrace and failure... This Aussie is no John Wright to leave silently and then come back years later, to write a very non-controversial book.

Expect Chappell to make every noise that is possible... Maybe a book too and this would definitely be one spicy tale about Indian Cricket...
